Well, it was back to the floor today. Except for Eucharist and lunch break, we were at it all day. Some important things got done. We concurred with the Bishops to establish a Church-wide, mandatory medical insurance program, and a church-wide, mandatory lay pension program. Both passed by huge margins. I hope the wisdom of Convention reveals my forebodings about the medical plan to be completely groundless.

The Bishops came to the House of Deputies for a joint session around the presentation of the Budget for the next three years. The birds of the air and the lilies of the fields aren't looking real good this year, and the Budget is way down. A number of programs and staff have been cut or eliminated, and the next General Convention is planned to be two days shorter. At the same time, the Episcopal Church's asking from the various dioceses will be reduced in 2011 and 2012, the help out during this time. We'll be studying the details tonight and debate it on the floor tomorrow. Because of the complexity and detail of a three-year, $140 million budget, changes from the floor are quite unlikely. But, as always around here, you never know.

There may be some more fireworks tomorrow as the second shoe of the sexuality issue, blessings, gets ready to drop. Everybody has heard that the Bishops did something today, but nobody's saying just exactly what. For mere details on these and all the issues before Convention, check out the Episcopal Life link, and the other links on this site's Daily News page.

This was taken after the joint session with the Bishops, and everyone but Greg Westmoreland is here. As parliamentary machinations increase in complexity, so does the Deputation's Doodle.
These next two rows of snapshots were taken randomly in the Exhibit Hall and on the
floor of the House of Deputies. I hope they can help you get a.  of the place, and of what it is like being here.
